History

The College of the Scriptures was founded in 1945 with the goal of reaching and training African-Americans for ministry among their own people, as well as around the world. At that time Blacks were excluded from education in most white schools, including many of those of the Restoration Movement.

The beginning of the College of the Scriptures can be traced to the very seed bed of the Restoration Movement. The faith that dwelt in the founding President, Tibbs Maxey, dwelt first in his great grandfather, Asa, who preached the gospel in Kentucky within a few miles of his contemporary "Raccoon" John Smith.

The College of the Scriptures was incorporated on May 17, 1945, and began its classes with two students in September, 1945. R. Tibbs Maxey, Jr. was elected President and Dr. George Calvin Campbell, Vice president.

The College of the Scriptures continues to operate as a historically black college dedicated to providing a quality education for all students while focusing on the needs of African American communities.

Over its 60 plus year history the College of the Scriptures has started and/or assisted more Christian Churches/Churches of Christ serving the black community than any other school in the Restoration Movement.
